The Trial of Socrates

I.F. Stone

My friend Don Terry suggested this to me over a decade ago and it has been staring at me, accusatorily, from my bookshelf ever since. I picked it up a few weeks ago, reading it in three sittings, which means it isn’t exactly a page turner, but which is not to say it isn’t engrossing. It is, in fact deeply engrossing, and on no subject is it more so than on the question of who is and is not civilized, a word our leaders like to throw around these days. In a nutshell the book sets the main criteria as how one treats people from “out-groups,” meaning foreigners and strangers. I’ll put an excerpt up soon.
