Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found

Suketu Mehta

I’m going to India for the first time in a few days, and picked this up last week based on a friend’s recommendation. In addition to the general India background, I’ve lived in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai, three of the world’s mammoth cities (and in Abidjan, one of Africa’s biggest, and spent great amounts of time in Lagos and Kinshasa, two others), so I’m naturally intrigued with the subject of supercities.
Enough of the windup. This is great writing, full of personality and personal insights. It’s colorful, human, funny and really ambitious. I think Mehta’s nailed it. I’ll add some excerpts shortly.
