The White-Boned Demon – A Biography of Madame Mao Zedong

Ross Terrill

I bought this second hand from Amazon a while back. Terrill researched it in China and wrote it in 1981, close in time to the events, and he tells a powerful story. Most interesting is the sort of tick-tock he gives of the Cultural Revolution, and her leading role in it. There are better books for context, but for immediacy and a sense of the cast of characters, this tale of the era is very effective.
