My Romance

Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin is one of the under-recognized titans of the tenor, a man who continues to blow with an originality and verve that puts him right up there with Sonny Rollins and Dex in my book. This is such a fine recording. If you can listen to this tune, onee of but several pearls on a string here, and fail to be seduced, perhaps no jazz will ever touch you.
It’s from the Chicago, New York, Paris recording, released by Verve in 2004, after Griffin had marked 50 years in the music. I love Kenny Barron’s work here on the piano, and Roy Hargrove’s on the flugelhorn.
