The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia

James C. Scott

This book by James C. Scott has been a real revelation, bringing me back to a certain kind of thrill in reading: that of following the intellectual adventure of someone with a wicked mind and an insatiable, eclectic – and I don’t use this word lightly – mind.
This is a wide-ranging, serious, brilliant and hard to sum up book that I picked up to learn about SE Asia, and ended up having my thoughts about parts of the world as diverse as West Africa and western China, and on subjects as diverse as state formation, tribe, slavery, messianism, Maroon, among other things, deeply affected.
